Fuller House Premiere Date, Cast and Plot

THE SHOW WILL FOCUS ON D.J.

Fuller House's premise is strongly reminiscent of its predecessor, which featured widower Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) raising three daughters with the help of his brother-in-law, Jesse (John Stamos), and best friend, Joey (Dave Coulier). The 2016 Netflix reboot centers on Danny's daughter, D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure), who is now a thirtysomething widow bringing up three kids of her own with the help of her sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and childhood BFF Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber). "I really wanted to revisit the show in a new, fresh, modern way," Cameron Bure tells PEOPLE. "I've got to have a lot of input on my character, to decide what D.J. would be doing now. I'm really comfortable with the way it's working out." Expect a love triangle between D.J., a guy from her past and a hunky new prospect – plus, a potential romantic match for Kimmy!

Stamos, who is reprising his role as Uncle Jesse, broke news of the 13-episode spin-off during an April Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance, and he's been keeping fans up to date on the show's progress ever since. He shared an Instagram photo of himself reading a script on set. "Same sideburns - different decade," Stamos, who serves as a Fuller House producer, captioned the pic.

It's been two decades since Full House went off the air, but the cast is still tight and gets together often. So it should come as no surprise that Scott Weinger (D.J.'s old boyfriend Steve), Lori Loughlin (Aunt Becky) and even Blake and Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit (Jesse and Becky's twins Nicky and Alex) have signed on to join original series stars Saget, Stamos, Coulier, Cameron Bure, Sweetin and Barber. As for the Olsens …

MAKE ROOM FOR MICHELLE?

Though twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who shared the role of youngest Tanner daughter Michelle during the show's original run, initially weren't planning to be part of Fuller House (Stamos tweeted that he was "#heartbroken"), the door is always open for season 2 (if there is a season 2). "They've never closed the door to anything. I think the only thing that's changed, once we've done the show now, it doesn't seem like this gaping hole," executive producer Bob Boyett tells PEOPLE. "And I would only want to bring them in to do something good and be a part of an appropriate story or character development."

Sweetin, who is reprising her role as middle Tanner daughter Stephanie, told PEOPLE that her own children, Beatrix and Zoie, will occasionally join her on set. In fact, the day our reporter was there, Beatrix was charming John Stamos with a rendition of Katy Perry's "Roar" – and later cheered "Yay, Mama!" for Sweetin.

Worried that the reboot won't live up to the original? How rude! Bob Boyett, Full House's executive producer, and Jeff Franklin, who created the sitcom, are both on board for the Netflix series. "It's hard to go wrong because nobody's more protective of that show than he is," Loughlin says of Franklin. "That's his baby."

UNCLE JESSE & AUNT BECKY FOREVER!

Full House was always more about familial love than romance, but Jesse and Becky's relationship always served as a bright spot in the show. And as Stamos's recent Instagram shows, 20 years off the air has done nothing to dim their spark. Spoiler alert: They kiss in the first episode, and the crowd goes wild. Have mercy!
